About Top Gun DriversTopgundrivers.com is dedicated to finding the right position to fill your How much money can I make, driving with Top Gun Drivers? Your earnings depend on the type of driving job you choose. But you can make a great living as a company driver, up to 47 cpm with OTR. The 12-month average for a driver at Top Gun Drivers is near $50,000. In addition to mileage pay, we offer short-haul, accessorial and bonus pay. And with our payroll process, you get your money every Thursday—no waiting for bills. You can receive your earnings by direct deposit or through Comdata®. How often will I get home with an OTR job? Top Gun Drivers understands the importance of quality time off, and we're committed to getting you home every two weeks. Just give us 14 days notice, and we'll make it happen! How many days you take off will vary by your choice of truck assignment and whether you run out of a Terminal or a Home Center location. Running out of a Service Center or Satellite Terminal, you'll earn two days off for every seven on the road with an option to keep your assigned truck; or if you run out of a Home Center, you'll earn one day off for seven on the road and take your truck home. With either program, you decide when to take off and how much of your time to use. What kind of truck will I drive and how fast will it go? Our fleet is 100% conventional, consisting primarily of Freightliner® Century Class tractors and several hundred International® 9400i Eagle high-rise sleepers, featuring the 435-hp ISX engine. Both offer 10-speed transmissions, aluminum wheels, and comfortable interiors. In the interest of safety, Top Gun Drivers's tractors are governed at speeds of 63 mph or 65 mph. This helps to keep fuel, insurance and accident costs down, and the savings enables Top Gun Drivers to provide you with one of the best pay packages in the truckload industry. Can my family ride along with me on my truck? Yes, Top Gun Drivers offers a passenger program for spouses, family members or significant others, (with approval from our Corporate Safety department). Your children aged 16 and older may ride year-round; children over the age of 10 may join you during summer months. A nominal monthly fee for insurance is required. Can you guarantee how many miles I'll get? Although OTR drivers average about 2,500 miles per week, there is no mileage guarantee. The company is committed to providing you as many miles as you can safely and legally run. We know you need to keep moving to make a living; and Top Gun Drivers needs to keep you moving for the company to remain profitable. Remember, our customers pay us by the mile, too, so it's in everyone's best interest to get you as many miles as possible. Will I have to slipseat? Top Gun Drivers offers permanently assigned tractors that you can take home when you take time off. Whether you choose an assigned truck may depend on the amount of home-time you prefer. As an OTR driver, you can be home every 14 days. If you like having more time off, you can leave your truck at the nearest terminal and take four days off; you'll get a freshly-detailed tractor when you return. If keeping your truck is a priority, you can still take two days off every 14 days and bank the other two, using them later to take up to 30 consecutive days of time off. It's really a matter of personal preference. Some drivers insist on an assigned truck, while others consider slipseating a great tradeoff for doubling their home-time. Will I have to unload trucks? The overwhelming majority of Top Gun Drivers freight is no-touch—98%, in fact. As an OTR driver or Independent Contractor, you'll find that loading and unloading is a very rare occurrence. In our Dedicated division, non-driving duties vary by position; but again, the majority of freight is not driver-unload. Does Top Gun Drivers provide training or hire student drivers? At this time, our company does not provide CDL training or programs for inexperienced drivers. We do welcome drivers with minimal experience, however. It only takes three months of recent class A driving experience to qualify for employment as a first seat solo driver with Top Gun Drivers. If you have a class A CDL and at least six weeks of driving experience, you may qualify for our Finishing Program. What does it mean to be a "dedicated" driver? With Top Gun Drivers, the term "dedicated" means that you drive within our Dedicated Contract Services division, servicing one specific customer and hauling their freight exclusively. For that reason, a Dedicated job usually offers more consistency in operation, miles, home-time and pay. Dedicated jobs can be OTR, regional or local. But about 50% of Top Gun Drivers's Dedicated drivers are home nightly. Is there a waiting period to enter the Lease-Purchase program? You can become a Lease-Purchase driver with Top Gun Drivers Transport from day one with an affordable down-payment, or drive with us as a company driver for 120 days and we will waive your down-payment. You can lease a late-model Freightliner conventional with low monthly payments for 36 months. All trucks pass a 135-point inspection and carry the remaining warranty, plus there is also an optional maintenance service agreement. Our Lease-Purchase program is the easiest and most affordable way to fulfill the dream of owning a truck, and it comes with all the Top Gun Drivers Transport partnership advantages offered by our Independent Contractor group. I already own my own truck. So, what are my options with Top Gun Drivers? We have OTR, Regional, Intermodal and Dedicated opportunities for independent contractors. And with Top Gun Drivers as your partner, you minimize your risk as a business owner while you maximize profits through savings on fuel, tires and maintenance services. You’ll find options like voluntary health programs and an optional maintenance escrow, in addition to all of the other partnership advantages we offer. See our Independent Contractor page to learn more. Can owner-operator teams lease on with Top Gun Drivers? Yes. Top Gun Drivers offers lease agreements for team drivers. Teams must be related or both drivers must share an ownership interest in the truck. Teams can expect to average near 4,000 miles per week. What's your policy on pets? Top Gun Drivers prohibits pets aboard company trucks, as many drivers prefer to maximize their time off instead of running an assigned tractor. Pets are also prohibited in lease-purchase trucks. With prior approval, independent contractors may bring a cat or dog weighing less than fifty pounds. A current vaccination record must be provided. Where will I attend orientation and how many days will it last? Top Gun Drivers holds paid driver-orientation classes each week at several of our Service Centers. In most instances, you will attend orientation at the facility closest to your home. Travel, lodging, and meals are provided. Your scheduler or confirmer will make sure you're aware of your class date and time, as well as any bus/flight schedules and lodging arrangements that have been made for you. Company drivers will attend a 3-day orientation, and independent contractors will attend for four days. You'll start by taking a road-driving test, DOT physical and drug screen (at Top Gun Drivers's expense). Orientation will generally include classroom instruction regarding safety and operational procedure, information on voluntary health programs, and completion of hiring paperwork. We will provide a more thorough list of items for orientation, but ask that all drivers bring the following:
